With NeverAway

still green

I built this because it happened to me.

Reading a 40-page spec. On a call from my phone. Thinking. Five minutes without touching the keyboard and Teams told my whole team I'd left. Then a “you there?” ping.

Mouse jigglers move your cursor and click things by accident. Browser tricks stop working. So I wrote 150 lines of Python that just tap Scroll Lock twice every few minutes. Windows sees input, your status stays green, nothing on screen changes.

NeverAway — Ctrl+C to stop
NeverAway is running.
  interval : 3-4.5 min (random)
  display : kept on
Keep the lid OPEN and the screen unlocked.
  Press Ctrl+C to stop.

[15:49:29] tap #1 (idle 0s, running 3 min)
[15:52:30] tap #2 (idle 0s, running 6 min)
[15:56:55] tap #3 (idle 0s, running 10 min)
[16:00:52] tap #4 (idle 0s, running 14 min)

Three steps. Thirty seconds.

1

Unzip

Anywhere. Desktop is fine. Nothing gets installed.

2

Double-click NeverAway.exe

A small window opens. Leave it open.

3

Walk away

Ctrl+C when you're back. Normal sleep and lock return instantly.

The one rule: lid open, screen unlocked, plugged in. It can't un-lock a locked screen — nothing can.

Why not a mouse jiggler?

Cursor never moves

Scroll Lock, tapped twice. Key ends where it started. Nothing gets clicked, dragged or typed.

Read every line

Full Python source in the zip. ~150 lines, standard library only, zero network calls. You can see exactly what it does.

No install, no service

Close the window and it's gone. No startup entries, no registry, no tray icon quietly running forever.

Questions

Aren't there free tools for this?
Yes, and some are good. Most are installers that add a background service or a tray app — the kind of thing IT policies block and antivirus flags, and you're trusting a binary you can't read. NeverAway is one file, no install, no service, and the full source is in the zip. If a free tool already works for you, keep using it. This is for people who want it to just work in thirty seconds and be able to see what it does.
Will my company know?
There is nothing to detect — Windows just sees a keypress. But check your workplace policy. Some employers care about presence indicators; you're responsible for how you use it.
Windows says "Windows protected your PC".
That appears for any new app without a ₹30,000/year code-signing certificate. Click "More info" then "Run anyway". Once. Or run the .py with your own Python and skip the exe entirely.
Does it work if I lock my laptop or close the lid?
No. Nothing does. NeverAway stops Windows going idle; it cannot un-lock a screen. Lid open, screen unlocked, plugged in.
Mac?
Not yet. It uses Windows APIs.
Is it a subscription?
No. Pay once, keep it. Use it on every Windows machine you personally use.
